Tsunami Appeal Fund Raiser

Introduction

26th December 2004 saw one of the worst natural disasters in living history when an 8.9 magnitude earthquake occurred under the sea near Aceh in Northern Indonesia, triggering a massive tsunami. The tsunami hit several countries including Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, The Maldives, India, Malaysia and Bangladesh killing hundreds of thousands of people and destroying millions of homes. People around the world have donated millions of pounds to charity to aid the survivors of this disaster but more is needed. WSKO sent a call out to all Shorinji Kempo clubs around the world to help raise more money.

South Coast Fund Raising

On 21st January 2005 members from the Bournemouth, Southampton University, Poole, Southampton and Oxford Shorinji Kempo clubs and the Okinawa Goju- Ryu Karate club [which trains at the Littledown Centre] came together for a fund raising event. Kenshi, including juniors aged as young as 7, took part in performing an exhausting 1,000 kicks and punches followed by a technical training session. All adults who took part donated £10 and the juniors made various donations from their pocket money. Some Kenshi who were unable to attend also donated money to the fund.

On the night the total raised was £1,060.98 with additional donations this figure has risen to £1,100.
